Jim Chalmers MP has been the Member for Rankin since September 2013, proudly representing the people and suburbs of southern Brisbane and Logan City where he was born, grew up and made a home with Laura, Leo and Annabel.
He was elected to his second term in July 2016 with an increased margin, and was subsequently appointed as the Shadow Minister for Finance, entering the Shadow Cabinet for the first time.
From October 2015 to July 2016, Jim served as the Shadow Minister for Financial Services and Superannuation, Shadow Minister for Sport and the Shadow Assistant Minister for Trade, Investment and Productivity. He also served as the Shadow Assistant Minister for Resources from May 2016 to July 2016. Prior to that, Jim was the Shadow Parliamentary Secretary to the Leader of the Opposition and Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Trade and Investment. He was also appointed to the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Tax and Revenue and Joint Standing Committee on Trade, Investment and Growth, while also serving on the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Economics until October 2015.
Before being elected to Parliament, Jim was the Executive Director of the Chifley Research Centre and prior to that, Chief of Staff to the Deputy Prime Minister and Treasurer. He has a PhD in political science and international relations and a first class honours degree in public policy. He has taught politics at three universities. Jim is also a member of the Griffith University Logan Campus Development Advisory Group and the Board of Advisors at the Center for Australian, New Zealand and Pacific Studies at Georgetown University in Washington D.C.
