Three in every four taxpayers in Braddon will be better off under Labor’s tax plan than they would be under the Liberals.
“All up, about 39,000 local workers in Braddon, or 76 per cent, will get a bigger, better, fairer tax cut under Labor,” Acting Shadow Treasurer Jim Chalmers said.
“Under Malcolm Turnbull’s tax cuts, the biggest benefits will go to his own electorate, while Braddon is 147th on the national pecking order – the fourth smallest beneficiary.
“When you look at his track record, it’s no surprise that Turnbull is again favouring the top end of town at North West Tasmania’s expense.
“At the same time as he rips $730,000 from the North West Regional Hospital and up to $14.7 million from Braddon’s schools, he’s giving $80 billion to multinationals and the big banks in tax handouts.”
Labor’s candidate for Braddon, Justine Keay, said: “While Turnbull panders to the top end of town, Labor wants to grow the national economy by investing in local communities like Burnie and Devonport and making sure people have the chance to get ahead.
“Labor wants to boost Braddon’s local economy, which is why we’ve committed up to $2 million for mobile blackspot towers, will establish North West Tasmania as a Renewable Energy Zone, and will invest $60 million to upgrade the Bass Highway.
“We’re committed to supporting local businesses, which is why we’ve prioritised investment help for more than 6,600 local Braddon businesses over tax handouts for multinationals and the big banks.”
Mr Chalmers said: “A vote for the Liberals in the Braddon by-election will only encourage Turnbull to do more damage to North West Tasmania by sending a cheerleader back to Canberra for more harsh cuts.
“A vote for the Liberals is a vote for smaller tax cuts for locals and less money for local hospitals, TAFEs and universities.
“A vote for Justine Keay is a vote for local workers, local communities, the local economy, and a genuine local champion.”
