Federal Labor thanks Dr Guy Debelle for his decades of service to the nation at the Reserve Bank, including more than five years as Deputy Governor, and we wish him well as he takes on new challenges in the energy sector.
 
Having worked with him in previous roles, I’ve seen firsthand his commitment to the national economic interest and the dedication he has brought to his responsibilities at the RBA.
 
On multiple occasions he’s been asked to help shepherd our economy through tumultuous times and he’s done that professionally and with great skill.
 
The vacancy created by his departure represents an important opportunity for renewal, and to promote more women into the most senior ranks in particular.
 
Federal Labor expects to be properly consulted on this appointment, especially given the proximity to the election.
 
We have the utmost respect for the Reserve Bank, the Governor and his team, and we seek to play a constructive role in the personnel decisions taken following Dr Debelle’s departure.
