The sooner the Federal Government can complete its damage assessment of flood-affected communities in and around Logan the better, so that locals who are doing it tough can receive much-needed relief.
Disaster Recovery Payments, administered by the Commonwealth through Centrelink, provide one-off financial assistance of $1000 per eligible adult and $400 per eligible child.
Although the community is strong, resilient and getting on with the clean-up as floodwaters subside, people are hurting and these payments will go a long way in helping them get back on their feet.
The Palaszczuk Government has already announced a $180 relief payment to help affected residents purchase food or other essentials and we would support the Federal Government following suit with its own relief payments.
The destruction around Logan is plain for all to see and as soon as assessors are able to confirm this, the payments can flow.
Labor would support any Federal Government efforts to speed up the assessment process.
This is not about politics; it’s not a partisan thing; it’s about people who are doing it tough getting the help they need when they need it.
