Federal Labor Commits to Action on Local Blackspot

A Shorten Labor Government would invest $14 million to replace the roundabout at the intersection between Priestdale and Rochedale roads with traffic lights to improve safety at this dangerous black spot.

Federal Labor’s funding of 50 per cent of the estimated project cost would be contingent on the remainder being provided by the Brisbane City Council and the Logan City Council, given these are local roads on the border between the two councils.

The roundabout is widely recognised as a danger zone for pedestrians, particularly school children.  Last November a child was badly injured when he was hit by a car at the intersection.

An analysis undertaken by the Queensland Government’s Department of Transport and Main Roads concluded that the best way to improve safety would be to replace the roundabout with a signalised intersection.

Labor’s Candidate for Bonner, Jo Briskey, welcomed the overdue funding investment.

“This is a big win for the local community, particularly for the parents and students from surrounding schools.

“For too long, lives have been put in danger and traffic delays have only got worse.

As the new Federal Member for Bonner, I will make fixing this intersection my absolute priority. Enough is enough. It must be fixed” said Jo Briskey.

Labor’s Member for Rankin, Jim Chalmers, explained that the investment would help to alleviate the concerns of local parents about the intersection.

“We have Redeemer Lutheran College and Rochedale State School both within very close proximity and St Peters just down the road from this intersection which means that children walking from school have to cross around here to get home. So what this investment means is that local parents won’t have to worry about their kids having to navigate such a dangerous intersection.”

Local residents have made it clear: they want their elected representatives to work together to fix the situation – and if successful at the coming election, that’s precisely what Federal Labor in office will do.

We stand ready to act.
