Statement on retirement of Lauren Jackson

31 March 2016

We pay tribute to Lauren Jackson as she retires from basketball today after almost two decades in the sport which she has described as the “love of her life”.

Lauren Jackson is one of Australia's best ever sportspeople, having represented Australia in four successive Olympic medal-winning teams, in addition to an outstanding record in the WNBL in Australia, the WNBA in the United States and at a variety of World Championships.

At her peak, Lauren Jackson was arguably the most dominant basketball player in the world.

While it is disappointing to see her career end as a result of injury,  there’s no doubt that she will continue to make a valued contribution to Australian sport mentorship and advocacy in the years ahead.

We welcome her commitment to continue her important work in the role of Patron of Rape and Domestic Violence Services Australia.

We wish Lauren Jackson all the best in her career post-basketball and look forward to her continued contribution to Australian sport and society.
